????Eco-Apps That Actually Work in Israel

(My month-long field test, friendly diary style)
Phones never leave our hands, so why not let them nudge us toward greener habits? I downloaded five eco-apps that do work from Israeli app stores and lived with them for four weeks. Here’s what really helped—and what simply made me smile at the stats.

1  AWorld — tiny “drops” of victory
I set a goal to walk instead of grabbing short taxis. Every time I hit that target, AWorld gives me a shimmering “drop.” Watching those little drops pile up (hello, –0.8 kg of CO₂!) is weirdly addictive. Within a week I was chasing more drops by shaving watts off my electric bill and shortening my showers. Gamification without guilt—yes, please.

2  SpareEat — surprise dinner, zero food waste
Every few days SpareEat pops up a “magic bag” from cafés or bakeries nearby: perfectly good leftovers at 50–70 % off. I pick up the bag, unpack it at home like a present (sushi? almond croissant? who knows), save cash, and keep a kilo of food out of the bin. Pro tip: check the feed after 6 p.m.—restaurants post most bags then.

3  Earth Hero — a green road map, not a chaos of tips
I love checklists but hate endless online advice threads. Earth Hero turns the vague goal “use less household energy” into a tidy plan: wash at 30 °C, skip the dryer, switch bulbs. End-of-week: the app shows CO₂ and shekel savings on a friendly progress bar. Calm, visual, motivating.

4  Closca Water — free refills, zero plastic bottles
“Buy water or stay thirsty?”—problem solved. Closca’s map shows fountains, taps, and cafés happy to refill your bottle. Tel Aviv already has plenty of points, and you can add new ones yourself. After a month: zero single-use bottles. Tip: download the offline map so refill spots load even without data.

5  Good On You — honest fashion scores
I wanted to shop for clothes without drowning in greenwashing. Type a brand, and Good On You rates it on People / Planet / Animals and suggests a nicer alternative. Bonus: occasional discount codes for high-scoring labels. Global database, 3 000-plus brands, works perfectly here.

30-Day Snapshot
+43 drops earned in AWorld—motivation visualized.
5 magic bags rescued via SpareEat—delicious and waste-free.
–12 kWh on my electric meter with Earth Hero’s nudges.
0 plastic bottles thanks to Closca Water.
Smarter wardrobe—two sweaters passed the Good On You test.

Your Turn
Pick one of these apps and try it for a week. Notice what shifts—in habits and in your wallet. Share a screenshot of your first eco-achievement in the comments, and I’ll feature the best stories in the next #EcoShiftApps post!
